Aurora Summer Camps

Theater Arts Camp

Our 2022 summer camp produced J’s and the Giant Peach, with campers helping make sets and costumes as well as performing.

Theater Arts Camp - ALL SESSIONS FULL

The musical for summer 2024 will be Annie, adapted from the legendary Broadway musical.

Theater and music are inseparable at Aurora School and in our popular summer camp. As is the tradition at Aurora’s Theater Arts Camp, we adapt our performance to be age appropriate and accommodate every camper. Some of our secrets to making this happen are simplifying some of the characters’ lines, and having multiple actors playing the same character. These actor changes make the performance and camp so much fun! No one is left out; it is a priority that all of our campers have the opportunity to be in the performance.

It’s not all about acting though . . . our diverse team brings so many talents that campers have the chance to participate in many parts of the production. In addition to acting, all campers have the opportunity to work on building musical instruments, set design, costume design, choreography and singing. There are even some special projects in works. Every camper has a role in the play. If a camper is not comfortable performing in front of people, we offer behind-the-scenes parts, such as set changers, curtain managers or sound effects specialists.

Younger Campers – Entering 2nd Grade and Younger

Campers are divided into age groups with age appropriate activities. Younger campers are part of the chorus and are assigned smaller roles if interested. They also help with set and costume design, at an age appropriate level. Children are introduced to a variety of theater activities, including playing instruments, singing, dancing and movement, all in the context of the acting experience. All campers have the opportunity to be in the performance.

Older Campers – Entering 3rd Grade and Older

Campers are divided into age groups with age appropriate activities. Older campers help design costumes, build sets, assist in directing younger campers, and audition for the main roles if they are interested. Campers are introduced to a variety of theater activities, including playing instruments, singing, dancing and movement, all in the context of the acting experience. All campers have the opportunity to be in the performance.

Counselors in Training (CITs) – Entering 7th Grade and Older

Our Counselors in Training (CIT) program is very popular for those campers who have outgrown the traditional camper age, but who still love our Theater Camp and want to contribute. CITs work with the CIT Director to support the production, campers, and adult staff in many ways, all the while learning the skills and techniques needed to become full-fledged counselors. CITs work in the woodshop, help with costumes and set design, and help with songs, music, and acting. During the performance CITs either work backstage or help with the younger camper groups. Due to the growth and popularity of this program over the years, all CITs are required to attend the full 4 week session. We have three different tiers for CITs, based on their age and experience.

Counselors in Training 1: just graduated campers going into 7th or 8th grade
