Mission and History
Aurora School is committed to helping children build a foundation for a lifetime. It is what deeply matters to our community of families, faculty and staff. It guides all our choices and actions as a school.
Aurora is a diverse community honoring the mind, heart and imagination of every learner. We are dedicated to developing individuals who are academically excellent, socially compassionate, and emotionally secure. Families at Aurora actively share in the opportunity to grow along with their children, confident they will thrive in the world.
Aurora School was founded in 1988 as a progressive community of families, faculty and staff dedicated to developing life skills that would allow each child to fulfill his or her potential and thrive in the world. Aurora has grown from grades K - 3 in 1989 with 20 students, to its present K - 5, reaching a maximum enrollment of over 130 students in 2000.
Aurora School prides itself on the individualized attention given to each student with a maximum student/teacher ratio of 13 to 1. Aurora's multi-graded classrooms, authentic assessment, developmental focus, a strong performing arts program and personalized attention to individual achievement are the highlights of its success.
Academic excellence is fostered in a spirited atmosphere of invention, curiosity, and collaboration. Dedicated, professional educators are guided by a rich curriculum, one that exceeds California standards, and employ teaching methods supported by research and experience that help children learn best.
Social compassion is a cornerstone of personal growth and citizenship. At Aurora we nurture and model learning with humor, independent spirit, and teamwork, in concert with a balance of genuine respect and playfulness. We celebrate diversity, and appreciate and encourage each person to contribute his or her unique value as a member of our supportive community.
Learning flourishes in an atmosphere that encourages risk, an atmosphere that cultivates opportunities to try, rethink, and try again. We honor and support each child's natural curiosity and love of learning. And we believe that thoughtful communication, sensitivity to others, and appreciation for individual development provides the right environment for each child to master academic challenges and fulfill his or her potential.
