Movement
Aurora's movement program provides opportunities for Kindergarten and first grade students to explore and expand how they move, act, behave. It promotes discovery through doing; learning in action. In weekly movement classes, the children develop awareness of their actions, explore alternative options and create new ways of moving through their world. The K/1 movement program focuses on three areas of development:
Movement Exploration
These activities allow developmentally appropriate opportunities for children to create their own physical knowledge of:
Spatial awareness
- Explore movement in relation to self, to space around one's self and to traveling through space
Body awareness
- Experience functional anatomy of the skeleton: living in gravity, walking upright
- Explore the evolution of movement of humans as well as various mammals, reptiles and invertebrates
- Investigate how we breathe and how our heart beats in relation to different activities
- The qualities and role of water in our internal and external lives
Rhythmic Activities
We explore movement patterns in relation to time, energy, weight and flow through the use of percussion, instrumental music and song.
Games
- We play fun, engaging games to foster a love for movement and fitness.
- We invent games based on cooperative learning and group effort to develop mutual respect and appreciation for others.
