Social-Emotional Curriculum
Our Community Inside and Out
Children and adults learn best when they are secure and confident in their inter and intra-personal relationships. A primary goal for all Aurora community members is to develop and sustain a respectful, cooperative and supportive environment that is the foundation for learning and independent thinking. The name given to the affective aspect of the Aurora curriculum is Inside/Out. The focus of Inside/Out is to help students develop the social-emotional life skills they need to be successful in and out of the classroom.
Teachers lead students through activities that help them develop:
- group trust
- self-awareness
- positive communication skills
- conflict resolution strategies
- awareness and respect for similarities and differences among members of the school community
- empathy
Class meetings in which students and teachers share appreciations, problem-solve around classroom concerns and issues, and make plans for special assignments and celebrations are a planned, regular component of each classroom schedule.
Publications that support the Inside/Out curriculum
- Positive Discipline
- Talk It Out
- The Responsive Classroom Group
